Safety in Guanajuato

Although Guanajuato did not make the list of the 9 safest places to visit in Mexico, we still felt safe and relaxed. Alwys stay aware of your surroundings no matter where you go. Here in Guanajuato we felt safe even walking at night.

Checking out the Silver Mines

If you listen closely you can hear the stories that are whispered by the labyrinth of silver veins beneath Guanajuato. The city's silver mining history is not just a narrative, it's the backbone of Guanajuato's rich cultural heritage.

We did not visit the silver mines but I wanted to mention them here because they are part of the storied history of Guanajuato. So much so that I am inclined write about it here. So here is a little about what we learned about the silver mines when we visited Guanajuato, Mexico.

The adventure into the silver mines, such as the prominent La Valenciana, paints a vivid picture of the past. Once generating over two-thirds of the world's silver, these mines are now a pathway into understanding the city's glorious and sometimes tragic history.

Can you imagine seeing the miners, their faces glistening with sweat from the hard toil, smiling as they chisel out nuggets of silver, not knowing that their hard work would eventually make Guanajuato one of the wealthiest cities in Mexico? A stroll through these mine tunnels offer you a unique opportunity to reflect on the labor of love and sacrifice that built this city.

Sadie and I both love mines (She used to work in one). I am claustraphobic but I still woul love to venture in and see the amazing tunnels the miners have created while harvesting the silver. On our next trip we will see if we can make a stop at the mines and incude some pictures.

Despite the significant decrease in silver production today, the mines' impact is tangible. They still contribute to Guanajuato's economy, attracting streams of curious tourists, and they serve as a constant reminder of the city's affluent history. The Tunnels of Guanajuato

We did get some awesome videos of a few of the tunnels that are used as a thoughoughfare. It is amazing and worth hiring an Uber or catching a taxi just to drive through them. Or take a leisurely stroll through them but be careful and watch out for the vehicles.

I would not recommend walking through some of the longer tunnels but the short ones are kind of cool. The tunnels were built to help prevent flooding and to direct traffic away from the center of the city. As you can see they have become an attraction of their own.

Downtown Guanajuato Restaurants

We love food, and our travel stories will always include what we found to eat and places to go to find the best coffee. Guanajuato, Mexico, is no exception. The restaurants in the downtown area will provide you with a memorable introduction to Mexican cuisine, characterized by its richness, intense flavors, and variety.

El Papalote, is a tienda de dulces or candy shop. They have so much stuff we went back twice just to make sure we saw it all.

For those seeking traditional dishes, Truco 7 is your go-to restaurant. Located in a charming old building, it is famous for its enchiladas and pozole.

For breakfast, we recommend The Rooftop Desayunos Refugio, it was a great place for us to start our day. They offer refreshing drinks and amazing food, we all had a great time there.

In the mood for pizza? We suggest Peters Pizza. They have friendly staff a great atmosphere and delicious pizza. They are centrally located in the downtown area and they do deliver. There is so much to discover and so many different flavors you will not run out of ppizza to try.

All these restaurants not only offer great food, they also embody Guanajuato's warm hospitality. Their staff members are friendly, the ambiance is inviting, and their locations ideally position you for an easy stroll back into the city's vibrant streets.

Guanajuato's downtown restaurants go beyond satiating hunger; they augment the enchantment that the city weaves in the hearts of its visitors. We definitely loved walking around and taking pictures and enjoying the sites or downtown.

Coffee Culture in Guanajuato Mexico

A visit to Guanajuato, Mexico, wouldn't be complete without indulging in its exuberant coffee scene, an experience that promises to be as unforgettable as the city itself.

One our favorite coffee shops was Cafe Baratillo 16. It s located a short walk from the Jardin de Reunion and it perfectly exemplifies Guanajuato's rich coffee culture.

Another stand-out venue is Vivo cafe, a small coffee shop that offers a variety of blends in a cozy, friendly environment. They also highlight locally grown beans which contributes to the local economy.

There is something extraordinary about savoring a cup of coffee in Guanajuato. It offers you a chance to pause and reflect upon the grandeur of this vibrant city before plunging again into its color-filled streets.

There were so many coffee shops to try that we did not have enough time to try them all, but The Italian Coffee Comapny is another fantastic place to stop and rest and take in the scenery before moving on to your next exciting adventure.

We stopped here about midday. We were greeted by a barista who knew her coffee very well. She spoke a mix of english and spanish enough that we could understand each other.

The coffee is stronger here and has a bit of a bite so if that is your thing this is a must visit place on your journey. You won't go wrong taking a siesta at the Italian Coffee Company.

We felt dread and the sadness as well as being in awe of how well preserved they were. The mix of emotions was overwhelming and we did not stay too long. Make sure to visit early in the day to avoid the crowds as this is a well known tourist stop.

Some faces appear calm, others in anguish, providing a poignant reminder of the diverse range of human emotions. The mummification process occurred naturally due to the area's unique climatic conditions, which inadvertently preserved the bodies after they were buried. The Mummies of Guanajuato offer more than just a macabre spectacle; they provide a window into the past.

They remind us of the city's rich history, its traditions, and the inevitable passage of time. For those interested in history, anthropology, or even just looking for an unusual experience, a visit to the Mummies of Guanajuato is a must when exploring this vibrant Mexican city.

The Kissing Alley

Local lore tells the heart-wrenching tale of the Callejón del Beso, marked by a romance steeped in tragedy. In the 1700s, two young lovers, Carlos and Ana, resided opposite each other in this slender lane. Their love, deemed forbidden due to Ana's father's disapproval, found a way to flourish. Despite the narrow divide of the alley, so close their homes nearly touched, they shared kisses from their balconies.

The story takes a somber turn when Ana's father, a man of wealth and influence, discovers their clandestine affair. In a moment of fury, he fatally wounds Ana. She breathes her last in Carlos's embrace on their balcony, whereupon Carlos, stricken by despair, ends his life.

This sorrowful tale is the essence of Callejón del Beso's fame, symbolizing the intense romanticism that Guanajuato is known for.

Now, the alley draws countless visitors, eager to honor the legend of Carlos and Ana. Couples replicate the iconic kiss on the balconies and listen intently to their story. A popular belief holds that sharing a kiss on the alley's third step promises seven years of prosperity in love, intertwining the past with hopeful futures.

Sadie and I loved this story and this area. The walk to the Kissing Alley was beautiful, and like everywhere else very colorful. We did take pictures and kiss, on the stairs that lead up to the baloconies. As you can see from our picture the buildings are REALLY close.

The actual balconies are right above us in this picture you can see how they lovers could kiss without leaving their house. There is a small charge if you want to go up to the balconies to take further photos.

If you don't want to pay the fee or for whatever reason you can't climb the stairs, we understand, you can always stand in the Mock up of the kissing alley in the airport. Believe me any chance I get to kiss my wife I am going to take it.
