The Cost of Living in Ensenada: A Closer Look

Ensenada, a picturesque city on the Baja California Peninsula, offers a unique living experience that combines the tranquility of coastal life with the vibrancy of city living. When considering a move to Ensenada or planning a long-term stay, understanding the cost of living is crucial. This section explores the various expenses you'll encounter, making it easier to budget for life in this beautiful Mexican city.

Housing Costs

Renting in Ensenada: The rental market in Ensenada can vary widely depending on the location and type of property. For a standard one-bedroom apartment in the city center, prices can range from $300 to $1600 per month and more. If you’re looking for more space or a property by the beach, prices can increase significantly.

Buying Property: Purchasing a home in Ensenada offers value for money, especially when compared to similar coastal cities in the US or Europe. Prices for a decent-sized home start at around $100,000 but can go up depending on the area and amenities.

Be careful when buying a house here and make sure you are aware of all of the rules you have to follow. 

It's perfectly legal for foreigners to buy land outside the restricted zones 50 kilometers (about 31 miles) from shorelines and 100 kilometers (about 62 miles) from international borders; foreigners can hold direct deeds to property with the same rights and responsibilities as Mexican nationals.

Utilities and Internet

Monthly utilities, including electricity, water, and gas, for a standard apartment can average between $30 to $70, depending on usage and season. The internet, a necessity for many, costs about $20 to $40 per month for a decent speed suitable for streaming and work-from-home setups.

We pay about $27.00 USD for fiber optic internet. We use a company named Telcel and they are one of the biggest in the area. We have used other smaller companies but for the fastest internt cannection and the most reliable serviec so far Telcel has been the best for us.

Groceries and Eating Out

Groceries: Shopping for local produce and essentials in Ensenada is generally affordable, with a weekly grocery bill for one person averaging between $20 to $50, depending on dietary habits and preferences. For a family of three we spend a bit more than the average. We are learning to shop locally to save money on groceries.

Dining Out: Ensenada is known for its fantastic seafood and local cuisine. Eating out can be quite affordable, with meals at local eateries costing around $5 to $20. More upscale dining experiences in tourist areas or finer restaurants will cost more.

Transportation

Public transportation is readily available in Ensenada, with bus fares (called micros) costing about $0.50 to $1 per ride. For those preferring personal transportation, you can bring your own car to Baja California without a TIP (Temporary Import Permit) which is necessary if you are traveling on the mainland of Mexico. 

Gasoline prices in Mexico are generally lower than in the US but fluctuate with the market. We have found the prices to be comparable with Arizona gas prices in general and much lower than California.

Uber, DiDI, and Taxis are also available here in Ensenada and are safe to use. I think Uber tends to be a little less expensive than taking a taxi.

Healthcare

Healthcare in Ensenada is both high-quality and affordable compared to the US. Many expats and locals choose private healthcare for faster service and access to a broader range of services. Routine doctor’s visits can cost between $20 to $40, while private health insurance plans vary based on coverage but are significantly less expensive than US plans. (link to healthcare post)

Entertainment and Leisure

Ensenada offers a wealth of activities ranging from wine tours in the Valle de Guadalupe to surfing and relaxing on the beaches. Movie tickets cost around $4 to $6, and memberships to gyms or clubs can range from $20 to $50 per month.

If you like to try your luck there is Caliente Casino. For my club hoppers there are night clubs with various styles of music all located within walking distance of the city center. One of the more famous of these is Papas & Beer which also has a location in Rosarito as well.

Living the Ensenada Dream on a Budget

While the cost of living in Ensenada is generally lower than in many parts of the US, Canada, and Europe, prices can vary widely depending on your lifestyle choices and where in the city you choose to live. By understanding the local market and planning accordingly, you can enjoy the serene beauty and vibrant culture of Ensenada without breaking the bank.

We rented a 3 bedrooom AirBnB in 2021 for $1500 a month. It was centrally located and had all the amenities of home. The downside was it was the neighbors and the dogs but that was a small price to pay for the convience.

We also paid $1500 a month for a 3 bdroom house on the beach in Lengüeta Arenosa or Sandy Tongue. We stayed in the Mar Azul subdivision and it was one of the best places we have rented since we moved here. It was quiet, a beachfront property that was absolutely amazing.

We now live in a more “Mexican” area that we also love. we have a 5 bedroom house that we pay about half of that. Take your time and experience the different places Ensenada has to offer. You will find a place that is perfect for you.

The Best Neighborhoods in Ensenada for Expats

Zona Centro (Downtown Ensenada): The heart of the city, known for its vibrant street life, local markets, and close proximity to cultural landmarks. Ideal for those of you who enjoy urban living and easy access to dining, shopping, and entertainment options. For Sadie and I we prefer to live a little quieter lifestyle.

The centro area can be very loud and that is not good if you are a digital nomad and need to record videos without a lot of background interruptions.

We lived here for the first month we were here in Ensenada. A way to get our feet wet you might say. While we enjoyed the convenience of living close to the city the beach is what we came for.

Playa Hermosa: As the name suggests, this neighborhood boasts beautiful beaches and oceanfront properties. It's perfect if you are looking for a relaxed lifestyle with stunning sea views and beach access.

 Playa Hermosa, while beautiful to look at, is close to the Cruise port and that presents its own challenges. There are always a lot of people and tourists in this area. If you love being around people and the hustle and bustle of city life you will thrive in Zona Centro and Playa Hermosa. If not, read on.

El Sauzal: Located north of the city center, El Sauzal is becoming increasingly popular among expats due to its growing food and wine scene. It's close to several of the region's renowned wineries, offering a quieter lifestyle with gourmet experiences.

Chapultepec: A more residential area that's ideal for families and those of you who are looking for a tranquil environment. It features spacious homes and is close to schools, parks, and shopping areas, providing a balanced lifestyle.

Punta Banda: Known for its natural beauty, including hot springs and tidal pools, Punta Banda is a bit further from the city center but offers a peaceful setting and community-focused living. It's ideal for nature lovers and those seeking a slower pace of life.

There are 3 areas named Punta Banda all of them are a little drive from the city center and provide a similar lifestyle. They don't all have hot springs but they are all beautiful places to settle down and enjoy life.

Mar Azul: This community is noted for its luxurious properties, offering residents stunning ocean views and upscale living conditions. Mar Azul represents a premium living option for those seeking an exclusive and serene environment by the sea

There is a spot on the beach where you can dig a hole and get hot water!!! It is amazing. You get the benefits of a hot spring and the amazing view of the ocean.

We lived here after we spent 30 days in the Centro and Playa Hermosa area. While I love the city life, Sadie needs more tranquility to work and be creative. I find that I also love the tranquility and the atmosphere living on the beach provides.

La Jolla: While “La Jolla” is more commonly associated with the upscale neighborhood in San Diego, California, the name is also synonymous with luxury and exclusivity in several beach communities across Mexico. 

These areas are typically characterized by their beautiful landscapes, high-end amenities, and close-knit community atmosphere, appealing to those of you who are looking for a blend of comfort and elegance.

We tend to shy away from these areas. We are not particularly fond of what people from the U.S. have to say or how they tend to treat people.

In La Jolla you will find a tight knit community of expats, mostly from the US and Canada, who have retired and are living out their golden years on the beach for a fraction of the cost of a similar property in San Diego. 

La Bufadora Area: Famous for its natural marine geyser, the La Bufadora area is one of Ensenada's most visited tourist attractions. The community surrounding La Bufadora is known for its rustic charm and natural beauty, offering a more laid-back and nature-centric living experience. It's an ideal choice if you appreciate outdoor activities and a quieter lifestyle away from the city's hustle and bustle.

We lived in Campo 5 which is close to La Bufadora and while it did provide the quiet atmosphere and amazing views that we love it was a bit too far from amenities for our liking.

Each neighborhood offers a distinct living experience, catering to different preferences, whether you're seeking the hustle and bustle of city life, serene beachfront living, or a cozy community atmosphere, you are sure to find a locale that is just right for you and your family. 

We have that wanderlust mentality so we love to visit all the different areas and see what has the best fit for us. We encourage you to rent in different areas before deciding to settle on one.

What Is It Like Living in Ensenada?

Most people can understand it even if they don't speak it back to you. Take the time to learn some basic spanish and you will get along fine here.

Navigating the City: Getting around the city involves understanding the local transportation options, which could range from public buses and taxis to more modern services like ridesharing apps. For those living in or visiting the city, it's important to have access to reliable transportation information, to plan commutes efficiently. 

If you are driving yourself then problem solved, if not we recommend using Uber to get around as the taxis are more expensive. Also with Uber you know what you are paying upfront with the taxis you run the risk of price gouging because you are a foreigner. 

Not all taxi drivers do this but they are in the business of making money so beware.

Shopping and Amenities: The city's shopping scene offers a mix of local markets, where you can find fresh produce and unique local goods, and larger retail centers for a more extensive range of products including international brands. 

There is a Walmart® and a Costco® in Ensenada. There is also a Smart and Final® which is a grocery store chain predominantly in California. There are several Starbucks®, McDonalds®, Carl's Junior®, also known as Hardees®, and now a Wing Stop® here in Ensenada. 

If you are from the US and want a taste of home, Ensenada has you covered.

Amenities such as parks, recreational facilities, and cultural centers add to the quality of life, providing spaces for relaxation, exercise, and community engagement.

Banking and Financial Services: With the digital transformation in banking and financial services, we have access to a wide range of services that go beyond traditional banking. 

This might include online banking platforms for convenient management of personal finances, investment services, and even integrated shopping experiences within banking apps. Some places are starting to accept Apple Pay and Google Pay here.

We recommend finding a bank or credit card  that does not have international fees. If you can not do that then using one with minimal fees like capital one is advisable. Another great option is obtaining a card that is meant for people who travel frequently. This will help you not incur ATM fees and exchange rate issues.
